In 2018, along with the support from Al Marmoom Initiative (Dubai), we started U.A.E.’s first Equine Assisted Support Group Program for Parents of Children with Special Needs. In the support group, participants receive feedback and insight through their interactions with the therapy horses and each other.
What is Equine Assisted Therapy?
Equine Assisted Therapy is a type of mental health service, wherein a trained mental health professional, incorporates horses in their equestrian environment to work on certain therapeutic goals.
How Our Equine Assisted Support Group Sessions Work
Each month, we work on a different theme. For example, one of the sessions was themed ‘Letting Go’.
Based on the theme, we design activities with the horses and their environment.
We start every group by creating rules and boundaries for the group to promote a safe and non- judgmental environment.
We close each session with a simple processing activity.
Each session takes place on one Friday of every month.
The session lasts for maximum of three hours.
Benefits Of Working With Horses
The horse provides live feedback to the participants, simulating real life situations.
Provides opportunity for therapeutic touch and presence
Creates situational awareness and insight.
